Hot Mess Midge

Hot Mess Midge is a fly pattern developed by Umpqua Signature Tier Scott Stisser, designed to imitate a vulnerable, hatching midge. This fly was carefully crafted to replicate the critical stage when midges are most exposed during their emergence, showcasing a shuck, splayed wings, and clipped hackles that keep it riding flat in the surface film. The use of pink foam as an indicator ensures the fly is visible to anglers at a distance despite its low profile, making it easier to track while still mimicking the delicate, natural appearance of a midge struggling to break free.

Fish in very slow-moving or still water – The Hot Mess Midge works best in areas where the water is very still or moving very slowly, such as back eddies, slow pools, or near the edges of the river. In these situations, the fly will mimic the midge’s natural behavior, drifting just below the surface with the perfect presentation.
