About Gros Ventre River

The Gros Ventre River, a significant tributary of the Snake River in Wyoming, flows for approximately 74.6 miles. Originating in the rugged Teton Wilderness, its course meanders through western Wyoming before joining the Snake River in the Jackson Hole valley. This National Wild and Scenic River is characterized by its pristine waters, fed by snowmelt from the Teton Range, creating a dynamic environment with high, fast flows in the spring and early summer that gradually subside to lower, clearer conditions as the season progresses. The river's path is marked by deep pools, riffles, and undercut banks, providing excellent habitat for trout. A notable geological feature is the Gros Ventre Slide, a massive ancient landslide that formed Lower Slide Lake, which in turn influences the river's flow. The Gros Ventre River is renowned for its abundant population of native Snake River Fine-Spotted Cutthroat Trout, with many fish averaging 12 to 16 inches and some reaching up to 20 inches. Anglers will also encounter Mountain Whitefish in the calmer sections. The river supports a rich array of insect life, with key hatches including Stoneflies, such as Golden Stoneflies and Salmonflies, as well as Mayflies like PMDs and Blue-Winged Olives. Caddisflies are also prevalent, particularly in the evenings, and terrestrial insects like grasshoppers, ants, and beetles become important along the banks later in the season. Effective fly fishing tactics often involve nymphing to imitate the abundant aquatic insects, swinging streamers, and dry fly fishing to rising trout during hatches. The Gros Ventre River offers excellent opportunities for walk-and-wade fishing, providing a true backcountry stream experience amidst stunning scenery and abundant wildlife, including moose and elk. Despite its proximity to Jackson Hole, it remains a relatively uncrowded destination, offering solitude and exceptional fishing.
