About Gibbon River

The Gibbon River is a medium-sized river in Yellowstone National Park, flowing through both open meadows and canyon sections, providing a less crowded alternative to the Firehole River. This diverse fishery supports Westslope Cutthroat Trout, Fluvian Arctic Grayling, and large Brown and Rainbow Trout. Anglers can anticipate effective attractor dry fly fishing, especially in the meadow areas. Look for strong hatches of Blue Wing Olives and Pale Morning Duns, with Caddis and Golden Stoneflies also present in the canyon sections. Access points include Virginia Cascade Drive, Norris Meadow Picnic Area, Elk Park, Gibbon Meadows, and Purple Mountain. While the meadow sections can present challenging fishing due to wary, large trout, the upper regions offer smaller waters more suitable for beginners.
