About Gardner River - Upper

The Upper Gardner River, a backcountry tributary within Yellowstone National Park, is a midsize mountain river offering a mixed bag of trout and whitefish, fishing exceptionally well with nymphs. Recent floods have altered access, making formerly roadside sections now require a hike, which is expected to improve long-term fishing by reducing pressure and refreshing the river structure. The river presents two distinct personalities: its upper reaches are a gentle meadow creek ideal for beginners, while downstream it becomes a swift, canyon-bound river. Anglers can expect excellent numbers of fish, with opportunities for large post-spawn brown trout and pre-spawn rainbow trout, particularly in the lower river which now offers year-round fishing. Look for Blue Wing Olive hatches in the lower river, and be aware that hatches can be excellent in April.
