Because this is private land, camping, fires, and bringing dogs are strictly prohibited. These rules are non-negotiable for preserving access to this unique spring creek fishery. The creek itself features a steady, spring-fed flow that keeps the water cold during the hottest times of the year and virtually unfrozen throughout the coldest winter spells. The channel is defined by steep banks, swift runs, silt shoals, and dense beds of thick aquatic vegetation that provide heavy cover. This vegetation and the undercut clay banks create complex micro-habitats where fish can hide out of the main current. Because wading is strictly prohibited, all angling must be done while standing on the high, grassy banks. This creates a highly visual but challenging environment where you are constantly looking down into the water column or scanning the edges of weed beds for signs of fish. This water is known primarily for holding large, highly challenging brown trout, though you will occasionally run into a brook trout or a rainbow trout. The creek supports healthy insect life, starting with blue-winged olives, tricos, and sulphurs that bring fish to the surface. As the temperature rises, terrestrial activity becomes a major factor, with beetles and hoppers falling from the bankside grasses into the water. To match these hatches, you should carry Sparkle Duns, Birchell’s Hatching Midges, Spotlight Caddis Emergers, and Indicator Spinners for the trico falls. When the terrestrial bite is on, a PMX fished tight to the grassy edges is a reliable choice for drawing bankside rises. Success on Mossy Creek requires a stealthy approach because the fish are easily spooked by any sudden movement along the high banks. You must stay low, keep your shadow off the water, and make precise presentations to the edges of the weed beds and undercut banks. When the water gets high and cloudy after heavy rains, the dynamic shifts, and large brown trout move out of their deep hides to hunt aggressively. This is the ideal time to fish big, heavy streamers like the Near Nuff Sculpin, Trow Minnow, Muddler Minnow, or a flashy Kreelex near the clay banks. Drifting a San Juan Worm through the deeper runs or undercuts can also produce when the water carries some color.
