Report Summary for Mar 2026
This year: The Lower Provo is currently running at a good, classic winter flow, generally around 130-140 CFS. The water remains clear, with temperatures holding around 40°F. Be aware that high wind days can sometimes stir up the lake and lead to off-color conditions. This month, USGS data for the Provo River at Provo shows an average flow of 71 CFS, with a minimum of 50 CFS and a maximum of 93 CFS. Nymphing remains the most productive method, focusing on deeper channels, holes, drop-offs, and around structure. San Juan Worms are effective in deeper, faster runs. Look for midge hatches in the early afternoon, with sizes #22-24 being common. Blue-winged Olives are more active on cloudy days. Sow bugs are active all day, and rainbows will still take egg patterns. Good fly choices include the Bling Midge, Pheasant Tail Nymph, Bead Body Sowbug, and Pegged Egg. Rainbow trout may be gearing up to spawn earlier this year. The brown trout spawn is mostly over, but you will still see clean gravel patches, known as redds, in the tail-outs. It is critical to avoid walking on these areas to protect the fish. The best fishing window typically runs from 10:00 AM to 3:00 PM.
Best time of day: Afternoon
Prior years: Fishing on the Lower Provo River is excellent this month. Anglers are finding great success using both nymphs and dry flies. Be prepared for variable weather conditions, as it can be terrible with rain, snow, and cold temperatures. Despite the weather, the fishing remains strong. This is a true tailwater fishery, which means the fish benefit from cold, oxygenated water all year round. The blue-winged olive hatch in the springtime is second to none, making this a favorite for early season angling. While PMDs and caddis hatches are heavy in the summer months, the focus for now is on the prolific blue-winged olives. Access is easy through a railroad track following the river.
