About Ogden River - South Fork

The South Fork of the Ogden River, located northeast of Huntsville, is a Blue Ribbon fishery known for its native Bonneville cutthroat, brown trout, and whitefish. This generally shallow river, rarely exceeding four feet in depth, offers excellent opportunities for various fishing techniques. Anglers can find success with traditional baits like salmon eggs and nightcrawlers, as well as small lures and spinners. For fly fishers, the hopper/dropper technique is particularly effective, with beadhead nymphs proving irresistible to wary trout that eye the terrestrial or stimulator on top. Small jigs are also effective in the deeper pools and beaver-dammed areas. The South Fork is also renowned for its abundant moose population, making it a prime spot for wildlife viewing alongside fishing, especially during autumn weekends. Be mindful of regulations and practice proper equipment cleaning to prevent the spread of whirling disease. Public and private lands are interspersed, so be aware of your surroundings. The Magpie Campground and Memorial Park offer convenient access and camping options for visitors.
