The Rogue River originates high in the Cascade Mountains near Crater Lake National Park, tumbling and flowing over 200 miles before entering the Pacific Ocean at Gold Beach. This is one of Oregon's longest rivers, offering over 215 miles of fishable shoreline. The designated segment for fishing spans 84 miles, beginning at the mouth of the Applegate River and stretching down to the Lobster Creek Bridge. This section is known for its high-quality whitewater opportunities, indicating a dynamic river with varied flows and structure. Anglers can access the designated segment starting about six miles downstream from Grants Pass. The lower end of this segment is found about eleven miles upstream from the river's mouth at Gold Beach. For those new to the Rogue or fly fishing in general, certain areas near Medford in southwestern Oregon provide beginner-friendly fishing spots, allowing for easier wading and casting practice. Understanding these access points helps plan your approach to the river's extensive waters. The Rogue River is nationally recognized for its salmon and steelhead fishing, supporting healthy populations of Chinook salmon, Coho salmon, steelhead trout, rainbow trout, brook trout, brown trout, and cutthroat. Anglers target rainbow trout that can grow up to 30 inches long, while cutthroat average a more modest 9 inches. Steelhead are ocean-dwelling trout that migrate upstream to spawn, with significant runs occurring in late September. The Salmonfly Hatch is a notable event on the Rogue, signaling a prime opportunity for anglers to target feeding fish. When fishing the Rogue, focus on areas that provide cover and current breaks for these powerful fish. During the Salmonfly Hatch, large dry flies matching the insect's size and profile can be effective, especially in riffles and along seam lines. For steelhead, consider swinging flies through runs or nymphing deeper pockets and confluence areas where they hold.
