About Delaware River - West Branch
The West Branch Delaware River is a renowned 90-mile tailwater fishery in the Catskill Mountains, celebrated for its abundant wild populations of brown, brook, and rainbow trout, with potential American shad runs. Cold water releases from Cannonsville Reservoir sustain a robust aquatic insect population, making it a premier Eastern United States destination. Anglers will find excellent opportunities for dry fly fishing, nymphing, and streamer fishing, particularly during prolific hatches of Hendrickson, Sulphur, Blue Winged Olive, and various caddisflies. While drift boat fishing is popular, particularly for streamer fishing over 1200 CFS, wading is feasible and enjoyable at flows between 375-475 CFS, offering a more intimate experience in shallower riffles. For those seeking rising trout, the West Branch is consistently productive, but a keen eye for subtle takes and a perfect drift are essential, especially during Sulphur hatches when trout can be particularly selective.
