The West Branch of the Ausable River functions as both a freestone and a tailwater stream, presenting distinct water types that change character as you move downstream. The upper reaches feature slow-flowing meadow sections where the river winds quietly through open ground, demanding a stealthy approach on the flat water. Further down, this gentle flow transitions into classic pool-and-riffle configurations, broken up by deep, carved-out pool areas. This structural variety means you will constantly adjust your eyes to read different water speeds and depths within short distances of one another. The riverbed is highly textured, requiring you to look for subtle depth changes and seam lines rather than uniform gravel runs. Public access to these waters is excellent, secured through a combination of the Adirondack Forest Preserve and dedicated private land partnerships. You can easily access the river from several pull-offs located right along Route 86, making it simple to plan your day and move between spots. Key access points are situated near Monument Falls, the Whiteface Ski Center bridge, and the Flume, each offering a gateway to different water profiles. Further down the system near the dam at Wilmington, the river forms a technical, deep-water "lake" section. This particular stretch is deep, slow, and less favorable for wading, so you will want to focus your wading efforts on the quicker, shallower flows found upstream. This river holds both wild and stocked brown trout and brook trout, with fish averaging between 10 and 17 inches. To find them, you must adapt your approach to the changing gradient of the river. In the slow to moderate currents of the meadows above Route 86, the trout hold tightly against the banks and in the deep, slow-moving bends. As you move downstream of this stretch, the water accelerates into quicker pocket water, deeper pools, runs, and riffles. Here, the trout utilize the highly broken surface and the cushions of water created by large boulders to shield themselves from the main current. Successfully fishing this water requires matching your presentation to the specific speed of the current. In the quick pocket water downstream, use weighted nymphs or heavy streamers, keeping your line tight and your rod tip high to navigate the conflicting currents. For the slow-moving meadow sections, long leaders and delicate presentations are mandatory to prevent lining wary fish in the flat water. When working the deep pools, ensure your flies sink rapidly to reach the bottom where the larger trout tend to hover. Always watch your footing on the slick, cobble-heavy bottom of the swifter runs, and keep a wading staff ready when navigating the heavy flows near the Flume.
