About Hendry's Creek
Hendry's Creek is a small, tiny mountain creek that flows through red rock formations and pine forests at higher elevations before disappearing into the desert. Access requires a high-clearance two-wheel-drive vehicle to navigate the forest road, which leads directly to an obvious parking area near the creek. Anglers can find dispersed camping nearby, making it easy to spend a few days exploring the area. The lower section of Hendry's Creek, close to the parking area, is relatively open and less brushy, offering easier casting opportunities. As you move upstream from the parking area, the creek's character shifts dramatically. A trail follows Hendry's Creek to a wilderness boundary, allowing mountain bikes up to that point before requiring foot travel. Beyond the lower sections, the creek runs through a steep, brushy ditch, making access and movement challenging. Fish often hold in very small pockets of water, some no more than six inches across and three inches deep, tucked into the banks or around structure. Bonneville Cutthroat Trout are present in Hendry's Creek, but they can be difficult to locate and entice. If you are not finding success in the more accessible lower sections, a common tactic is to move higher upstream into the more rugged terrain. Fish may move to these higher elevations in early summer due to rising water temperatures downstream. The key to success here is precise presentation into these small holding lies. Dapping or flipping flies directly into these tiny holes is an effective method for targeting the Cutthroat. The challenging access and dense brush along the banks require careful movement and a focused approach. Be prepared to work for your fish, navigating the steep banks and thick vegetation to reach prime holding water. A short, accurate cast or dab is often more valuable than distance.
