About Flathead River

The Middle Fork of the Flathead River is a vast, wild river system in Montana, originating in the Great Bear Wilderness near Glacier National Park. This river is renowned for its populations of cutthroat trout and northern pike, with good numbers of decent-sized cutthroats found in the wilderness sections. Key hatches include Caddis, Blue-winged Olives, and Pale Morning Duns, making it a prime destination for dry fly and nymph fishing. While the wilderness portion offers technical whitewater best suited for guided trips, the river also provides excellent wading opportunities in sections with easier public access, particularly downstream from Essex. Anglers can also target larger bull trout, though these are protected.
