About Boulder River
The Boulder River in Montana is a steep, turbulent, and bouldery river offering a challenging fly fishing experience, particularly suited for experienced anglers. This river is home to eager rainbow and cutthroat trout up to 15 inches in the upper sections, and larger rainbows and brown trout, reaching up to 24 inches, in the lower reaches. Key insect activity includes significant hatches of Pale Morning Duns (PMDs), Caddis, and Golden Stones, making nymph and attractor patterns highly effective throughout the fishing season. While access to the upper river through National Forest lands is relatively straightforward for wading, the lower sections are primarily a float fishery with limited access, where a wading staff is recommended for navigating slippery rocks.
