About Lochsa River
The Lochsa River flows 70 miles through north central Idaho, paralleled by US Highway 12 for its entire length, making access straightforward. The river begins near the Powell Ranger Station. While much of the river is continuous whitewater with Class 3, 4, and some Class 5 rapids, calmer stretches offer good fishing. The upper reaches are cold and clear, featuring a mix of fast runs and slow pools. Downstream, the lower reaches become warmer and slower. Campgrounds are available along the river, and ADA access is provided. Westslope Cutthroat trout are found in the upper, colder reaches of the Lochsa, known for aggressive strikes and acrobatic jumps. Bull Trout, larger and more elusive, are present in the lower, warmer sections. Rainbow trout, whitefish, and smallmouth bass also inhabit the river, offering a chance to catch multiple species in a single day. Fishing is typically productive from early May to late September. Dry fly fishing is effective in the fast runs, imitating natural insects on the surface. In the slower pools, nymph or streamer patterns will imitate subsurface insects. The best time for Westslope Cutthroat is when the water is low and clear during the summer months, while Bull Trout are best targeted in the fall as they prepare to spawn.
