About Kelly Creek
Kelly Creek is a spectacular 26-mile tributary of the North Fork of the Clearwater River, flowing through the densely wooded canyons of the Clearwater National Forest in Idaho. Originating near the Montana state line, this high-gradient stream is characterized by its narrow width and predominantly pocket water, carved by tumbling, gin-clear water over mossy boulders. Its remote access, a significant factor in preserving its wild character, means that reaching Kelly Creek requires a dedicated effort, adding to the allure of this backcountry gem. The stream's character is defined by swift currents and cross currents, a testament to its steep descent. The primary quarry in Kelly Creek is the westslope cutthroat trout, with most fish averaging 12 to 14 inches, though substantial 20-inch specimens are also present, often found in deeper pockets outside the main current. Effective fishing strategies include both nymphing and dry fly presentations. Anglers will find success by imitating key hatches such as Stoneflies, Pale Morning Duns, Blue Winged Olives, and October Caddis. Terrestrial patterns like hoppers, crickets, beetles, and ants are also highly effective, especially during warmer months. For nymphs, Pheasant Tail, Hare’s Ear, and Olive Bead-head patterns are recommended, and dragging a weighted stonefly nymph along the bottom is a proven tactic. Nymphs can also be fished as droppers beneath dry flies. A 5 or 6-weight rod, preferably 9 feet or longer, paired with a floating line and an 8-foot leader, is ideal for managing line control in the creek's dynamic currents. Wading can be challenging due to numerous boulders; therefore, a sturdy wade staff and wading boots with good ankle support, potentially with studs, are essential safety items. Access to the lower 10 miles of Kelly Creek is available via a gravel road from Kelly Forks Campground, while the upper, roadless sections are accessible only by hiking the Kelly Creek #567 Trailhead, offering the least pressured and most exciting wild cutthroat action. Kelly Creek is a designated catch-and-release fishery.
