Report Summary for Apr 2026
This year: The Henry's Fork below the Ashton Dam is flowing at a good 1200 CFS this month. Fishing quality has been good, with plenty of bug activity to keep things interesting. Nymphing continues to be a highly effective technique on this section of the river. I recommend a two-fly setup, using a size 10 Sanchez Spandex Stone as your point fly, trailed by a size 16 Lite-Brite Serendipity or Lighting Bug as the dropper. Anglers can expect to see a variety of insects, including Golden Stones, PMD's, Flavs, Yellow Sallies, and Caddis. We're also starting to see Green and Grey Drakes making an appearance.
Prior years: Fishing quality is currently good to excellent on the Ashton Tailwater. The stretch from Ashton Dam down to Chester Dam offers the best opportunities, especially on days when the wind is calm. Mother's Day Caddis are emerging in huge numbers, with some Skwalas also scattered in the mix. Be sure to have caddis fly lifecycle patterns in your fly box. Below Chester Dam, the inflow from the Fall River introduces cold, discolored water, which compromises the good fishing found upstream. Anglers should watch for flow variations in the upper river as irrigation season begins. There is also a potential for poor water quality after July.
