About Big Wood River
The Big Wood River flows out of the Sawtooth Mountains in central Idaho, a 137-mile freestone system that carves through Blaine, Lincoln, and Gooding counties. It’s a dynamic waterway with riffles, runs, and deeper pools, often lined with cottonwoods that offer shade and structure. Focus your efforts upstream of Highway 75 where it crosses the river, as the flow can be intermittent downstream due to the Richfield Canal diversion. Access is generally straightforward, with several campgrounds and ADA-accessible points along the banks. You can visually track the river’s character, from the faster water in the upper reaches to the slower, deeper sections as it moves south. This river supports a healthy population of Rainbow Trout and Brown Trout, with Brook Trout also present. Mountain Whitefish are common and can provide excellent sport on smaller flies. The Big Wood is known for its hatches. Look for Stoneflies, Caddis, and Baetis (BWO) to be significant food sources throughout the season. When fishing the Big Wood, imitate these key insects. For Stoneflies, try patterns like the Pat’s Rubber Legs or a large Stimulator. When Caddis are active, Elk Hair Caddis or various pupa imitations will work. Baetis nymphs and dry flies, such as a parachute Adams or small Comparadun, are effective when the smaller mayflies are present. Streamers can also be productive, especially in the morning or evening, for larger Brown and Rainbow Trout. Work deeper pools and undercut banks with a Woolly Bugger or a Sculpin imitation. Anglers often share the water, so be mindful of drifts and casting lanes. Respecting other anglers’ space is key. When working riffles, focus on seams and faster water. In pools, target the deeper edges and any visible structure. A 5-6 weight rod is versatile for wade fishing. Always check current stream flow and regulations before heading out.
