Report Summary for Aug 2026
This year: The Yampa River is currently under strict closures, with the Tailwaters, Sarvis, Chuck Lewis, and Town stretches all closed to fishing until further notice. Flows at Steamboat Springs averaged 58 CFS for the month, dropping to a minimum of 45 CFS and peaking at 72 CFS, with water temperatures averaging a warm 69°F. Once restrictions lift and conditions allow for safe angling, expect to rely on a mix of subsurface and dry fly setups. Effective nymphing rigs typically feature Pheasant Tail Nymphs and RS2s. On the surface, Chubby Chernobyls, terrestrial beetles, and ants are solid choices, while streamers like Zonkers and Bunny Leeches are useful for covering deeper pockets of water.
Prior years: Flows are dropping every day, and water clarity is excellent. However, critical closures are in effect. The Yampa River through Town and at Chuck Lewis are closed to fishing. Please respect these closures and stay informed on local river status.
