About White River
The White River in Colorado's Flat Tops region is a premier freestone river renowned for its wild trout population, offering anglers opportunities to pursue large rainbows, browns, cutthroats, and cutbow hybrids, along with numerous whitefish. Key hatches include Blue Wing Olives (BWO), Pale Morning Duns, Golden Stones, Caddis, and Stoneflies, with terrestrials also proving effective. The main stem provides ample access along Highway 13 and County Road 8 near Meeker and Buford, while the more remote South Fork, accessible via trail from South Fork Campground, delivers a wilder experience, though it can be challenging with dense willows. For those seeking smaller water, the North Fork offers shallower, narrower sections accessible via County Roads 8 and 14, and near Trappers Lake, which serves as its headwaters and holds a significant concentration of Colorado River cutthroats. A 9-foot 5-weight rod is recommended for the main river, while 3- or 4-weight rods are well-suited for the North and South Forks.
