About Uncompahgre River

The Uncompahgre River is a 26-mile northward flowing tailwater in Colorado, renowned for its cold-water fly fishing. This fishery is home to rainbow, cutthroat, and brown trout, with trophy-sized specimens frequently found below Ridgway Reservoir. Anglers can anticipate key insect hatches including baetis, midges, stoneflies, and yellow sallies, making both nymphing and dry fly presentations highly effective. The Pa-Co-Chu-Puk stretch below the reservoir is a prime destination with ample public access and parking, offering excellent opportunities for catching large brown trout. The Montrose stretch, known for its clear waters and abundant trout, offers convenient access at locations like Chipeta Park, Fairgrounds Park, and near Main Street.
