About South Boulder Creek

South Boulder Creek, near Rollinsville, Colorado, offers a close tailwater option for anglers in the front range. Above Gross Reservoir, public access is limited, but the most consistently productive section lies below the dam. This tailwater section fishes well year-round, provided flows are maintained above 25 cfs. Winter can bring low flows and ice, but when the water is moving, the fishery is excellent. The creek is a classic Colorado tailwater, characterized by its clear, cold water flowing through a defined channel. Banks can be steep in places, with a mix of gravel bars, undercut banks, and larger boulders providing holding water for trout. The river's character is that of a medium-sized trout stream, easily navigated by wading anglers. Below Gross Dam, South Boulder Creek is home to strong populations of rainbow and brown trout. Anglers can also find brook and cutthroat trout in the upper reaches, offering a shot at a grand slam if you cover enough water. While the tailwater section primarily holds rainbows and browns, the chance of encountering larger, escaped fish from private clubs like Lincoln Hills above Pinecliffe exists, so keep an eye out for those bigger browns and rainbows. The trout here feed on a variety of aquatic insects. Expect hatches of caddis and stoneflies, along with midges and baetis. When these insects are active, dry fly fishing can be very effective. Nymphing is a reliable tactic throughout the year, especially during lower light conditions or when hatches are not apparent. Euro nymphing rigs with small beadhead nymphs like Pat's Rubber Legs, Hare's Ears, and Pheasant Tails are productive. For dries, try Elk Hair Caddis, Parachute Adams, and small BWO patterns. Streamer fishing can also produce, particularly in the deeper pools and along the banks. Work the water thoroughly, focusing on seams, riffles, and any structure that might offer cover or ambush points for trout. Remember to pack out what you pack in.
