About Roaring Fork River

The Roaring Fork River in Colorado offers a dynamic fly fishing experience, transitioning from a high-country stream to a wide, powerful river as it descends over 70 miles into the Roaring Fork Valley. This Gold Medal water is renowned for its plentiful populations of Cutthroat, Rainbow, and Brown trout, as well as mountain whitefish. Anglers will find consistent insect activity with hatches of Midges and Blue Wing Olives occurring throughout the year, even on warmer winter days. Two distinct Gold Medal stretches provide excellent opportunities: the section from Hallum Lake to Upper Woody Creek Bridge, accessible via the Rio Grande Trail, and the wider waters from the confluence with the Crystal River near Carbondale downstream to Glenwood Springs, ideal for floating. Recommended flies include Dries like Parachute Adams and Spent Midge, Nymphs such as RS2 and Pheasant Tail, and Streamers like the Black Woolly Bugger, best fished with a 9-foot 5-weight rod.
