About Los Pinos River
The Los Pinos River, also known locally as "the Pine," offers a distinct fly fishing experience in southwestern Colorado, shifting from the wide mountain streams to a more frontier, flatland feel. This river and its tributaries are designated Wild Trout Waters, primarily found north of Vallecito Reservoir within the Weminuche Wilderness Area, stretching for approximately 50 miles towards the Continental Divide. Anglers can expect to encounter a diverse population of wild trout, including brook trout, rainbows, cutthroats, and browns, with fish often exceeding 10 inches due to abundant insect life. Key hatches include caddis, mayflies, and terrestrials, providing excellent opportunities for dry fly and nymph fishing. Access is primarily via the Pine River Trail, with the first few miles offering easier wading and bank fishing along the canyon walls, while further upstream presents a more challenging, faster-water environment ideal for pocket water and riffle fishing. Special regulations mandate a two-fish possession limit with artificial flies and lures only.
