About Elk River
The Elk River in Colorado offers a diverse fly fishing experience, flowing from the Routt National Forest to the Christina Wildlife Refuge Area and serving as a major tributary to the Yampa River. This freestone stream is home to nearly every trout species found in the western United States, presenting varied fishing opportunities from pocket water and riffles to deeper sections. Anglers will find excellent opportunities during Blue Winged Olive hatches, which occur in early spring and late summer/early fall. While much of the prime fishing lies within private ranches, public access is available in the headwaters of Routt National Forest and the Christina Wildlife Refuge Area. A 5-weight fly rod is ideal for nymphing and dry fly fishing, while a 6-weight is better suited for streamers.
