About Crystal River

The Crystal River, a 35-mile freestone fishery originating above Marble, Colorado, offers excellent fly fishing opportunities in the Roaring Fork Valley. This river is home to plentiful rainbow and brown trout, as well as a significant population of whitefish. Anglers will find productive fishing in the tailwaters near Carbondale, particularly where the Crystal meets the Roaring Fork, characterized by pools and riffles formed by large boulders. Significant hatches include Blue Wing Olives (BWOs), Green Drakes, and Midges, providing consistent dry fly and nymphing opportunities. Much of the river flows through the White River National Forest, offering ample public access, though checking local maps is advised to avoid private property. A 4-weight rod is generally sufficient for targeting the river's trout.
