About Cochetopa Creek

Cochetopa Creek is a 40-mile freestone fishery in south-central Colorado, flowing into Tomichi Creek and shadowed by San Luis Peak. This stream is home to wild brown and rainbow trout, offering excellent opportunities for anglers seeking larger fish that encounter artificial lures infrequently. Anglers should be mindful of private property boundaries on the operational cattle ranches that encompass much of the meadowland, with the Cochetopa and Dome Lakes State Wildlife Areas providing public access. Significant insect activity includes caddisflies, mayflies, and stoneflies, making nymphing and dry fly presentations effective. A 4- or 5-weight rod with 4X-6X tippet is generally sufficient for navigating the creek’s pockets and riffles, with hip waders recommended for accessing prime water.
