Fly Fishing Stream Conditions Report: Cache La Poudre

This year: The Cache La Poudre is in great shape as we head into fall. Do not let the low flows scare you off, as there is still plenty of great opportunity up the canyon. Clarity remains clear, providing excellent visibility for both anglers and trout. Dry droppers have still been the most effective approach, with a foam beetle or ant and a midge or blue-winged olive nymph trailing behind. Sizing down your presentation is key to fooling fish in these conditions. Keep your setups delicate, and target the deeper pockets where trout are holding. Look for blue-winged olives and midges to spark some activity, especially in the cooler parts of the day. A Parachute Adams or Griffiths Gnat can be highly effective when fish are looking up.

Prior years: October brings quiet, golden, and balanced conditions to the river, with flows holding steady between 70 and 94 CFS. The water is crystal clear and temperatures are in an ideal cooling trend between 44°F and 50°F. These lower and clearer flows require a stealthy approach; sizing down to 6X tippet, utilizing long leaders, and scaling down the size of both dry flies and nymphs will prevent spooking trout in the clear water. Anglers should prepare for cooler morning starts, with the prime fishing window occurring during the warmer midday hours from 10 AM to 3 PM. Blue-Winged Olives and midges dominate the drift. On cloudy afternoons, expect stronger BWO hatches and rising trout in riffle transitions and slower seams. Dry-dropper setups remain highly effective, as do small emergers. It is also the beginning of streamer season, with brown and rainbow trout showing increased aggression before the onset of winter. Nymph deep seams and pocket water in the mid-canyon using natural colors and subtle presentations. Be mindful of active wildlife along the river corridor, and watch your footing on slick granite. Always avoid disturbing redds and active spawning zones during this season.
