About Big Thompson River
The Big Thompson River, also known as "The Big T," is a Colorado freestone river originating in Rocky Mountain National Park and flowing through Estes Park and Loveland. It offers excellent fly fishing for wild-born rainbows, cutthroats, and browns, averaging 10-12 inches. Key hatches include midges, Blue Wing Olives (BWOs), caddis, stoneflies, and Tricos, making it a diverse fishery. Below Forrest Canyon, the river features abundant pocket water and riffles, with public access primarily along Highway 34 from Idlewild Dam to Viestenz-Smith Park, though anglers should be mindful of private property. Moraine Park provides a safer access point for fishing upstream tributaries and meadow areas. The river is best fished with a 4-weight rod and chest-high waders due to its consistently cold water. A 9-mile catch-and-release, artificials-only section exists below Lake Estes to Waltonia Bridge.
