Report Summary for Oct 2026
This year: At the Durango gauge, flows have averaged 1053 CFS this month, ranging from 528 to 2190 CFS with an average water temperature of 52°F. Flows are lower on other stretches, with the Salida area running around 187 CFS at 50°F, and the stretch below town stabilizing around 267 CFS at 55°F after Bighorn Sheep Canyon came back online following heavy rains. Dry-dropper setups featuring smaller terrestrial patterns or a Rusty Spinner mayfly are highly effective through riffles and drop-offs. Deep nymph rigs are also proving successful. Below town, dry-dropper fishing is producing well as the water continues to clear and stabilize. Anglers must keep an eye out for spawning brown trout in the fall and strictly avoid wading on or fishing near active redds. Strong fall baetis and midge hatches are keeping fish active, alongside the final stretch of summer golden stonefly and red quill activity. Great fly options for these conditions include the Juju Baetis, Flashback Pheasant Tail Nymph, and Chicken Little.
Best time of day: All day
Prior years: Conditions are looking excellent with good flows and active pre-spawn brown trout. If you are looking to escape the crowded tailwaters, this is a perfect time to get out on the water. Fish are moving into the riffles early, with the best action occurring from midday through the afternoon as the water warms. To maximize your success, avoid the obvious roadside pull-offs. Walking just ten minutes away from these highly pressured spots can easily double your catch rate. Subsurface action is strong with Pheasant Tails, Copper Johns, and BWO emergers in sizes 18 to 20. When the sun begins to fade, transition to swinging or stripping small streamers like Thin Mints and mini leeches to target aggressive fish.
