Leeches (subclass Hirudinea) are segmented aquatic worms found in lakes, ponds, rivers, and streams. Depending on the species, they may be black, brown, olive, or reddish and range considerably in size. Leeches typically live near the bottom, hiding among mud, rocks, vegetation, and submerged structure, although they may also swim or drift through the water column. Their slow, undulating movement and substantial profile make them an important food source for trout, bass, pike, and other predatory fish, particularly during low-light periods. Leech imitations are effective in both moving and still water, with hook sizes 6–12 commonly used to match their natural size and profile.
