Description

Overview: The Trico, short for Tricorythodes, is a tiny mayfly renowned for its massive summer and early fall hatches. These insects, with their black-and-white bodies and delicate translucent wings, are a staple for trout in calm rivers and streams. Tricos are most famous for their synchronized spinner falls, where clouds of male and female spinners gather, creating a buffet for selective trout.

Nymph Stage: Trico nymphs are small, streamlined swimmers, typically ranging from 1/8" to 1/4" in size. Their bodies are dark brown to olive-black, with two long tails and slender profiles. Hook sizes 20–24 are ideal for imitating these tiny nymphs. Fish them with dead-drift presentations in slow-moving water, focusing on early morning hours before hatches or spinner falls.

Adult Stage: Adult Tricos are minute mayflies, measuring around 1/8" to 1/4" with black bodies and white or clear wings. The males and females differ slightly, with females having a lighter abdomen. The spinners are distinguished by their clear wings and slender bodies, often seen in dense mating swarms. Dry fly imitations on hook sizes 20–26 are essential for matching these tiny insects. Spinner falls typically occur in the early morning, making precise casts and drag-free drifts critical when targeting trout feeding on these diminutive mayflies.
