Description
The Hellgrammite, the larval stage of the Dobsonfly, is a formidable creature found in fast-moving water, often clinging to rocks. As fierce predators, they prey on small insects and can grow up to 1-2.5 inches in length, armed with sharp pinchers. Ranging in various colors like black, olive, green, and brown, size is crucial when drifting in fast currents. While adults are typically nocturnal and not significant in fly fishing hatches, their larval form is highly sought after by fish.
