San Jac Squirrel image

Description

The San Jac Squirrel is a versatile fly pattern created by Kyle Hampton and Rob McConnell in the early 2000s, inspired by a squirrel hunting trip along the East Fork of the San Jacinto River in Texas. Designed using local materials like squirrel tail and dubbing, the pattern mimics baitfish or large nymphs, making it highly effective for bass, panfish, and trout in creeks and bayous. Originally tied to honor the region and its forage base, the fly blends natural squirrel fur with UV dubbing for movement and visibility. It performs well when stripped, swung, or dead-drifted, and excels on light rods in small water.

Pro Tip

Dead-drift the San Jac Squirrel near submerged structure or along cutbanks—its buggy, undulating profile draws reaction strikes, especially in slower-moving water.
