Peacock Water Boatman

The Peacock Water Boatman was designed by Brian Chan, renowned for his innovations in stillwater fly fishing patterns. This fly imitates the water boatman, a small aquatic insect that thrives in ponds and lakes, where it is a staple prey item for trout. The use of peacock herl for the body not only captures the iridescent sheen of the insect’s exoskeleton but also enhances the fly's natural buoyancy, mimicking the bug’s ability to trap air bubbles for underwater mobility. Developed in the 1990s, this pattern has proven indispensable in nutrient-rich stillwaters, especially during the fall months when water boatmen become highly active.

Belly Drench: Pre-soak the fly in water before casting to reduce excessive buoyancy. This helps it settle naturally in the water column, particularly in crystal-clear conditions where overly flashy presentations can spook fish.
