Description
The Blue-Winged Olive (BWO) parachute fly pattern is an iconic dry-fly imitation designed to imitate the adult stage of small olive-bodied mayflies that emerge and hatch in cool-water trout streams. Its parachute style—featuring a horizontal post/hackle collar and an upright wing—was developed in the early 20th century as tiers sought flies that would ride low and flush in the surface film while offering better visibility for the angler.
Pro Tip
Match not just color but size and silhouette: BWOs are often size 18–24; the shallower the water and the smaller the insect, the smaller the fly should go.
