Description
The Loop-Wing Dun was created in 1974 by legendary fly fishing author and innovator Gary Borger. It was developed to solve a specific challenge: imitating tiny mayfly duns in a way that maintained an upright wing profile, yet remained simple to tie and delicate in appearance. Many traditional upright-wing dry flies were either too bulky or difficult to tie in very small sizes. Borger’s solution was elegant—use a single loop of material to form the wing. This loop not only provided a realistic, upright silhouette but also gave the fly aerodynamic stability during casting. The pattern sits properly on the water with minimal effort, making it perfect for technical fishing situations where trout are inspecting every detail. Typically tied in sizes 18 and smaller, the Loop-Wing Dun is most effective during sparse or selective hatches, especially of small mayflies like Baetis.
