The Improved Sofa Pillow is an evolution of the original Sofa Pillow fly, which was created in the 1940s by Pat Barnes in West Yellowstone, Montana. The name "Sofa Pillow" originated when a Texan angler, upon seeing the large fly, remarked, "It's as big as a sofa pillow!" The Improved Sofa Pillow was developed to enhance buoyancy and effectiveness, making it a reliable choice for imitating large stoneflies, particularly the salmonfly (Pteronarcys californica), during their prolific hatches in Western trout streams.
