Description

Humbug Midge is a fly pattern designed by Umpqua Signature Tier John Wood, specifically created for the technical tailwater trout found on the South Platte River. Unlike the Graveyard Midge, which is designed to imitate midge emergers, the Humbug Midge is intended to be used as a versatile pattern for when hatches are scarce or nonexistent, making it ideal for everyday fishing in challenging conditions. Its contrasting abdomen and rib colors, combined with the brilliant fluorescent orange wing buds, create a highly visible fly that stands out in the water, making it easier for trout to spot and target. Though it works well throughout the water column, the Humbug Midge has proven to be especially effective as a trailing fly in Euro nymphing or indicator nymph rigs.

Pro Tip

Target deeper pools and seams – Though it can be fished throughout the water column, the Humbug Midge excels in deeper pools and seams where midges often cluster. Cast it to the edges of deeper holes or along current seams, where trout are likely holding and feeding on midges that are drifting with the current.
