About Bighorn River

The Bighorn River in Montana is a premier tailwater fishery renowned for its exceptional brown trout fly fishing. This cold, clear river boasts an incredibly dense fish population, with estimates of three to five thousand trout per mile, particularly in the 13-mile stretch below Yellowtail Dam. Anglers can anticipate excellent dry fly opportunities, with significant hatches including Pale Morning Duns and Caddis. While floating is a common method, wading and shoreline fishing are also viable, with public access primarily at the Afterbay Dam, 3 Mile (Lind), and Bighorn Access points. The river's productivity stems from the cold waters exiting the dam, creating an environment rich with mayflies, aquatic worms, midge larvae, and small crustaceans.
