Quill Buzzer

The Quill Buzzer is a minimalist chironomid imitation that has gained favor among technical anglers for its segmented realism and clean silhouette. Stripped peacock eye quills, or dyed alternatives, allow fly tyers to replicate the gas-filled appearance of a real midge pupa about to emerge. While no single originator is credited, it evolved within UK competition fly fishing where realism and subtlety matter most. This pattern is especially effective in clear water and under pressured conditions.

Retrieve with three-inch hand-twist pulls and abrupt one-second stops at varying depths. The pause often provokes takes due to the fly’s suspended position.
