Description
Medallion Midge Pupa is a fly pattern created by Umpqua Signature Tier Pat Dorsey, designed to provide a more realistic imitation of a midge pupa. Unlike many generic midge pupa patterns that are impressionistic or overly bulbous, the Medallion Midge is a more accurate representation of the pupa as it is during emergence. With its delicate body, the fly closely mimics a midge pupa just before it breaks through the surface to become an adult. Pat Dorsey designed this pattern to fish high in the water column during midge hatches, often using a two-fly nymphing rig with a strike indicator to present it effectively.
Pro Tip
Use a micro-rig for extra sensitivity – In highly technical water, such as tailwaters, trout can be extremely selective when feeding on small midge pupae. Employ a micro-rig setup with a very fine tippet, such as 7X fluorocarbon, to increase sensitivity and improve the detection of subtle takes. The light tippet helps the fly to sink more naturally while also making it harder for the fish to detect the line, resulting in more bites from wary trout.
