The Holy Grail is a celebrated attractor-style caddis emerger/bug nymph created by the renowned fly designer Charles Jardine. It’s often used as a dropper below dry flies or as a stand-alone nymph. Recipe
- Hook: #10–16, Tiemco 2487 or 2457 (curved shank as a variant).
- Bead: Gold 7/64" to 3/32" Cyclops or equivalent bead (for weight and profile).
- Thread: Bright red (e.g., Veevus 14/0, UTC 70-denier) — also creates a hotspot
- Rib: Small pearlescent or opal tinsel for flash.
- Body: Natural hare’s mask dubbing.
- Wingcase: Pheasant tail fibers
- Hackle Collar (Legs): Natural Hungarian partridge full collar
Tying Steps
- Mount the curved-shank hook and slide the gold bead onto the hook.
- Lay down bright red thread, then tie in the bead behind the eye.
- Tie in the tinsel rib, lay down the hare’s mask dubbing for the body.
- Secure pheasant tail fiber wingcase over the body.
- Add a full partridge hackle collar in front of the bead.
- Whip-finish and trim—optionally apply head cement for durability.
