Description
The Black Bear fly is a traditional Atlantic salmon fly pattern that originated in the 1920s, created by Harry Smith of Cherryfield, Maine. Smith's original design was all black, crafted to attract salmon in the murky waters of the East Coast. Over time, other fly tyers have added variations to the original design, incorporating green and flash elements to increase visibility and appeal, particularly in different water conditions. The Black Bear is also known as the "Conrad" on the Miramichi River, a popular variation used in Canada. It shares a close relationship with other famous patterns, including the Preacher and Undertaker, with its dark and flashy profile intended to attract salmon during various stages of their feeding or migration.
Pro Tip
Fish in Low-Light or Murky Waters: The Black Bear fly is ideal for fishing in murky or low-light conditions, thanks to its dark body and flash. The contrast of black and flash can be easily spotted by salmon, even in deeper, darker water. Fish it during early morning, dusk, or in areas where water clarity is compromised.
