The Coal Car

The Coal Car, designed by renowned fly tier Randall Kaufmann, is a darker variation of his earlier Freight Train pattern, tailored specifically for steelhead fishing. Kaufmann introduced this fly to provide anglers with an effective option during overcast days or low-light conditions, where its subdued tones combined with vibrant accents make it particularly enticing to steelhead. The Coal Car has since become a staple in the fly boxes of steelhead anglers, especially in the Pacific Northwest.

Shadow Pocket Ambush: Target deep, shaded undercuts beneath overhanging trees during midday. The Coal Car's dark silhouette blends naturally with shadows, while its red accents flash just enough to provoke a territorial reaction from lurking steelhead.
