Description
The Bi-Wing Green Drake, created by renowned fly tyer Matty Howard, is a modern adaptation of Green Drake patterns designed for maximum visibility and buoyancy. Howard, celebrated for his innovative fly designs, developed this pattern to imitate the majestic Green Drake mayflies that appear during one of the most eagerly anticipated hatches of the year. As Howard explains, "My observation of the naturals as they emerged played a key role in the construction of my Bi-Wing Green Drake. I found mimicking the dun as it struggles to break the surface film produced the most takes." To achieve this, he designed the fly so the material representing the nymphal shuck rides just below the surface, while the foam thorax holds the body in the film
Pro Tip
Mimic Emergent Movement: During slower hatch periods, lightly strip the fly in one-inch increments across the surface to imitate a Green Drake struggling to emerge. This action can be irresistible to trout that are looking for vulnerable prey.
