Description
The Fluttering Stone, designed by Ken Morrish, is a dry fly that effectively imitates adult stoneflies. Morrish, a renowned fly designer and co-founder of Fly Water Travel, is celebrated for his innovative patterns like the Morrish Hopper and Morrish Mouse. In developing the Fluttering Stone, he observed that many stonefly patterns featured bulky, heavily hackled heads, whereas natural stoneflies possess slender head profiles. To address this discrepancy, Morrish designed the Fluttering Stone with a more accurate head profile, realistic segmented body, jointed rubber legs, and high-visibility locator patches, resulting in a pattern that closely mimics the natural insect's appearance and behavior.
Pro Tip
Pre-Soak for Realism: Before casting, briefly dip the Fluttering Stone in water to slightly dampen the materials. This small adjustment can reduce excess buoyancy, giving the fly a more natural ride in calm or slow-moving waters where overly buoyant flies might look unnatural.
