Description
The Hangdy-Downdy Hecuba Cripple, designed by Ken Burkus and produced by Fulling Mill, is a specialized dry fly pattern crafted to imitate the Hecuba mayfly, commonly known as the "Great Blue-Winged Red Quill." This large mayfly species emerges in late summer and early fall, particularly in Western rivers like the Snake and Bitterroot. The fly's design features a curved hook and trailing shuck, with a foam back and CDC wings, allowing it to "hang" in the surface film, effectively mimicking an emerging Hecuba mayfly struggling to hatch.
Pro Tip
Focus on fishing this pattern in slow to moderate water with soft or silty bottoms, as Hecuba mayflies typically inhabit these areas.
